Stacy Barthe Details Recording With Frank Ocean & New Collaborations [Interview pt. 2]
As I’ve said many times, Stacy Barthe’s music is something magical. In part two of our interview the talented songstress sheds the details on one of my favorite collaborations this year with fellow crooner Frank Ocean. She also talks more about her new EP and features with some amazing talents like John Legend, Estelle and Melanie Fiona.
Stacy really painted a picture with her interview as she does with her music, captivating any soul willing to lend their attention. Read the full interview after the break, or click here to read part one first.
What collaborations can we look forward to on your new EP?
I’m going to do a song with John Legend, and that’s pretty much it. I love voices like Frank Ocean, Luke James…they’re just so dynamic, they don’t sound like anybody.
When you did “Without You” with Frank Ocean…that duet was really magical. How did that come together?
The Surf Club was in the studio, we were just vibing…we were playing this beat, which was a track for “Without You,” and I didn’t have any concrete lyrics I just wanted to go in there and vibe it out. I went in and recorded different parts to the song. That humming part actually came while I was waiting for the engineer to start recording. It just kind of fit where it fit. That was day 1, so day 2 I came in and pieced everything together and I put all the hooks where it needed to be. By the end of the night Frank came by just to say what’s up and he heard the song, I asked him to get on it. I was interested in how he was gonna approach it, like what his perspective was gonna be. He came at it like [he did] and I was like…that’s clever.
And the clearing of the throat from him was intentional.
Can we expect another video from you soon?
Now we’re working on the next couple of videos which is gonna be “The Only One,” which is part 2 to “Never Did,” “Comfy Little Coffin,” which is gonna be a dual video, and “Let It Be” is gonna be the last one.
As an artist, I’m sure you have your rituals when you’re recording, writing etc., how do you get yourself prepared for a show?
It’s about the dress for me. I’ve done a few shows out here in L.A., but I have a friend of mine who makes my dresses its given like a tribal, sheek vibe. The style is very regal. Even if there were no music, the dress alone would be like whoa. I love creating a moment for every time I get on stage. My ritual is that I don’t wear shoes on stage, ever. It’s basically this gown and my magic carpet, and I sing. Me and my band try to add different breakdowns to the songs, it’s always different.
Are you going to be doing any collaborations for other artists’ projects?
I am working with John Legend and we wrote a couple songs for his album. I co-wrote a song for Estelle for one of the songs on her album, Melanie Fiona, that’s pretty much it but whoever wants to work I would love to.
